It is easy to assume print is finished. Inboxes are crowded, social feeds move fast, and digital is simple to measure. Yet a well-made piece of mail from a trusted local institution still gets opened, set on the counter, and talked about. For credit unions, whose members span every age group, print and digital work best together.
Where print earns its place
- Reaching a defined geography. Mail is a natural fit for a community charter or a new branch area. You can reach every household in the neighborhoods you serve.
- Big financial decisions. Mortgages, home equity, and auto loans are considered purchases. A physical piece stays around while the decision is being made.
- New member onboarding. A welcome kit in the mail feels more substantial than another email and can carry the next steps you want a new member to take.
- Members who are not digitally engaged. Some members do not open email or use the app. Print may be the only channel that reaches them.
- In the branch. Posters, brochures, and rate sheets still support conversations at the teller line and the loan desk.
Make print and digital work together
Give every mail piece a short, campaign-specific web address or QR code that leads to a matching landing page. Time email and digital ads to run alongside the mail drop so members see the same offer in more than one place. Use the same creative across channels so the campaign feels like one thing.
Measure it
Print is measurable if you plan for it. Track visits to the campaign URL, use offer codes, and compare results for members who received the mail against a holdout group who did not. Matching new accounts and loans back to the mail list tells you what the campaign actually produced.
Design for a glance
A mail piece gets a few seconds. Use one offer, one headline, one call to action, and an obvious reason to act. Keep the credit union brand front and center so the piece is recognized as coming from someone the recipient already trusts.
Do not forget the fine print
Rate and product advertising carries disclosure requirements, along with the NCUA official advertising statement and equal housing lender notice where they apply. Build compliance review into the schedule, since print cannot be corrected after it ships.
