You can tell within a paragraph whether a piece of credit union marketing was written by someone who knows the movement. The giveaway is vocabulary. Bank language creeps in, and with it the suggestion that a credit union is just a smaller bank. It is not, and the words are where that difference shows up first.

The words that matter

  • Members, not customers. A customer buys something. A member owns a share of the institution and has a vote. Every time you write customer, you give away your strongest point.
  • Shares and share accounts. A savings account at a credit union is a share account because it represents ownership. You do not need to lecture members about it, but your team should know why the word exists.
  • Dividends. Members earn dividends on shares. It is a small word that carries the ownership story.
  • Not-for-profit. Not nonprofit, and not charity. A credit union earns money and returns it to members through rates, fees, and service. Say that plainly.
  • Community and field of membership, not market share. You serve a defined group of people. Talk about them as people.

Plain language still wins

Getting the terms right does not mean filling your ads with them. Most prospects do not know what a share draft is and should not have to. Use the everyday word in the headline, checking account, and let the credit union language do its work in how you describe the relationship. The goal is to sound like a knowledgeable neighbor.

Where bank-speak sneaks in

Look at vendor-supplied copy, website templates, third-party application screens, and automated emails. These are often written for banks and installed without edits. A member who sees Dear Valued Customer on a loan notice notices.

Make it a habit

  • Write a one-page language guide and give it to every employee, agency, and vendor who writes on your behalf.
  • Include approved ways to explain the credit union difference in one sentence, one paragraph, and one minute.
  • Review your highest-traffic pages and automated messages once a year for drift.

Language is the cheapest brand asset you have. Used consistently, it reminds members what they belong to, and it tells prospects there is something here a bank cannot offer.
