A new branch is one of the largest investments a credit union makes, and the first few months set its trajectory. Too often the marketing plan is a ribbon cutting and a banner. A grand opening deserves a campaign with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Phase 1: Before the doors open

  • Learn the neighborhood. Who lives and works nearby? Who do they bank with now? What do they know about credit unions?
  • Announce early. Coming soon signage on the site is some of the best media you will ever own. Add direct mail to surrounding households, local digital ads, and outreach to nearby businesses.
  • Explain eligibility. In a new community, the first question is can I join. Answer it everywhere.
  • Build partnerships. Chambers, schools, nonprofits, and neighboring businesses can introduce you faster than advertising alone.

Phase 2: Opening

  • Consider a soft opening so staff can settle in before the crowd.
  • Make the event about the community, not just the building. A donation to a local cause, a family-friendly format, and local food vendors go further than speeches.
  • Have an offer ready. New-member incentives and featured loan or deposit products give visitors a reason to act that day. Run offer terms and disclosures through compliance.
  • Staff for conversations. Every visitor should be able to open an account on the spot or book a time to come back.

Phase 3: The ninety days after

The opening is the start. Keep media running, follow up with everyone who visited, onboard new members toward a full relationship, and keep showing up at local events. Track new accounts, loans, and deposits by branch so you can see what is working.

Opening more than one

If you are opening several locations, build one campaign platform and adapt it for each community. A shared identity, a kit of templates, and an event playbook keep quality consistent and let each branch team add local detail.

The materials list

Plan for site signage, direct mail, digital and social ads, local print or radio where it fits, a landing page, press materials, invitations, event signage, giveaways, welcome kits, and staff talking points. Build the list early. Signage and print lead times are usually what put a schedule at risk.
